About the author

I am Forrest Andrew Jones. I run capital formation and investor relations for Blackwater Investment Group Inc., where my title is Chief Investment Officer, and I work from Montgomery, Texas. My work with Genvor, an agricultural biotechnology company, began in 2016 in investor relations. Today I hold the finance chief's seat there, and I hold or have held finance and investor relations seats at several other companies, some of them on a fractional basis.

Two things make my background a little unusual for this field. The first is that I write software, and I studied software engineering in New York City at The Flatiron School, after many years in finance. Much of the operating layer I use, from investor follow up to the tool that reads public filing data, is something I built rather than bought. The second is that I sit beside a program evaluation practice, which does federally mandated third party work, and that has changed how I read evidence in my own field.

Away from finance, I speak Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, I read a great deal, and I write fiction and poetry under the pen name SenLin. That name also belongs to a method for learning Mandarin that I built for myself as an adult learner and then turned into a workbook. The name means forest, and the method starts with one tree.

This site is where the long form work lives. Every article is an explainer rather than a pitch, written for founders, operators and peers who want to understand how something works. Where a rule is explained, the source is linked. Where a company is described, only its public record is used.
